I am trying to register as an agent via HMRC website and seem to be getting nowhere? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi

You need to speak to someone called the 'Agent Maintainer' at your local tax office. They will then get you set up.

Hope this helps.

I can't find anywhere to register on-line. They use that many different names I don't know if they are for the same thing or not.
They have
PAYE Agent Reference Number
Inland Revenue Agent Reference Number
Self-Assessment Agent Reference Number

I have managed to get the number for one of these in the format of AB1234 (letter letter number number number number) but can't find where to apply online for the SA Agent Reference Number.

Hi Peasie

The format of the number you have quoted looks the same as my paye agent reference number, I didn't know either that you could register online because I looked for ages at the hmrc and government gateway website and couldn't register so had to contact my local tax office. I would be interesting to know where you cold do this online

Regards

Mark

Hi Shaun

I have just had a play with this link and found that you must have your Self Assessment Agent Reference Number which I think you can only get from the Agent Maintainer a the local tax office

Regards

Mark

I am registered for PAYE and VAT submissions.....you start for all registrations from your home page, but may need further info to continue.

I have a agent number but have not yet tried to register for SA as yet, actually I had 2 numbers and HMRC called me the other day to ask which one I would prefer as they wanted to join the records together so I only had one number!

I finally registered online after calling my tax office twice a day for 3 weeks and either getting an answering machine or told the person I needed to speak to wasn't in the office, and obviously didn't know how to return a call.

Hi Kris,
It was in todays Accountancy Age news that the national audit office has revealed that the Tax office missed (that's right, missed!) 44 million calls during the year 2008-09.
Apparently they handle between 4 and 17 million calls per month... Doesn't take a brain surgeon to work out which month gets the 17 million!

Shaun.
