capital allowance on tax return
Permalink Closed

Hi all, just wanted clarification on what I am able to claim on my tax return.

I have purchased a sat nav for visiting clients, is this an allowable expense and could I claim the whole amount less personal usage and how much should I put as personal usage, it will be mainly for visiting clients and occasional for personal, e.g. when travelling on hols.

Also I have purchased a set of headphones for listening to music when I am working on my clients accounts as I live in an upstairs house flat, my neighbours below complain about noise. Can I claim for this and how much would I be allowed to claim?

Thank you in advance for your answers!

Hi Lorraine,

I never capitalise anything that costs less than £150, so I'm guessing your sat nav would fall into this category. I think your music would not qualify under 'wholly and exclusive' rules so unfortunately thats a personal expense.

the sat nav cost £69.99, so then from what you have said would need to be put as an expense. It isn't really used for personal but should I still put a % as PU?

Thank you for your reply!

I would agree with Rob, I would not claim for the headphones, as this is more of a personal thing.

The Sat Nav I would put through as a motor expense. Too small amount to claim as an asset. If you bought this because you needed it for business. eg finding your way to client meetings, then I would claim the whole amount.

Hope this helps.
