You previous post have been to do with rental property, is this to do with refurbing rental property? If so it may be possible to claim some back. The property needs to have been empty for several years (10 I think) or converted from a different use.

just to re-iterate though Hopeful (what is you first name by the way?). That's nothing to do with the contractors VAT. They will charge VAT regardless of whether you are able to claim it back or not.
You're right about these posts Bill. They do seem to go off piste a little especially when the three amigo's get involved.
The page that used to be there for refurbs has disappeared. See this page.
Talk later. It's all the fun of studying Pension contributions this morning! Quite enjoyed studying all the other employee benefits yesterday and just kept pushing this one down the list. Oh well, grit my teeth and start it I suppose.
Have a good one,
Talk later,
Shaun.

The building was an office it is now being converted into flats. Have applied to be VAT registered but heard nothing back from them yet, somebody came out & took some photos of the property and said they would be in touch.
Once renovated they will be sold not rented, this sub contractor is the first one to charge VAT, I did think he could charge if he was registered but I would want to see a VAT No. & make sure it is entered on his invoices.
Thanks for your help, I love this forum every question that gets posted gets a response - I think it'd brill

Hi Bev
I would say rightly so, I would imagine if the vat man ever came a knocking then he would want to see a vat invoice for the reduction in your vat liability if it was ever questioned .
