Studying for the ICB Payroll Diploma
Permalink Closed

Morning All

I'm waiting, waiting, waiting for ICB to send me a past paper and HLC to give me feedback on 4 assignments so I've decided to find something else to think about.

I'm totally green on Payroll and trying to plan how to study and prepare for the ICB exam. I'm fairly confident that the Sage Instant Payroll Self Study Workbooks should cover the computerised side of this but there is also a manual element to the exam and I don't imagine Sage is great for background and principles.

Could any payroll expert recommend a book that's going to cost less than the AAT volumes (The 2 course companions would total a but £47 from Amazon)?

Thanks
Neil

Neil,

The Sage Instant Payroll Self-Study workbooks describe the manual elements of payroll pretty well. In fact, I think it would be pretty difficult to properly do a payroll exercise (or exam!) without knowing the manual aspects of it. But that's just my opinion.

Something else Neil - just editing this post ..

If you are studying for tax year 2005-6 the following websites may be of use to you

Good luck

Hi Neil

Im studying for my payroll degree from June and have had to refresh my manual payroll, I brought both the AAT books (level 2 & 3) for about £8, they were last years but, the tax year is of no importance, so get on E-Bay & start bidding, good luck..

Neil,

Sounds like a good suggestion by Lisa.

However, I would like just to add that Sage offer a new version of the Instant Payroll Self-Study workbooks (v12) for 2010 (tax year 2009-10?) but you knew that didn't you? Version 11 covers tax year 2005-6. It probably doesn't matter too much which version you work on because the principles of payroll in both are virtually the same.

All the best

Peter

Peter, Lisa Jo

Thanks both for your replies. I was uncertain how important the years were as I've seen this mentioned so thanks for clearing that up.

Based on your replies, I think I'll get earlier years' books if I can but I won't stress about it if I can't

Cheers
Neil
