Hi all, just had an enquiry for bookkeeping and the client uses an on-line system called Xero and he wants to continue with this since he has done all the research and rates it highly. I've never heard of it and as I have just put the phone down to the client, not had a chance to research it myself. Just wondeed if anyone had come across it and if it was nice and user friendly.
Whilst I have no knowledge of this product I have seen it discussed quite frequently over on the uk business forum. I just did a quick search and quite a few posts on different threads came up with it and mostly were positive.
if your going to play with cloud computing a few things to check out :
1) Do they supply backups of your data. If so, how regularly?
2) Are the backups emailed to you?
3) Can the backups be loaded into Sage or do they have you over a barrel once you've started using them?
4) What is their server up time and what backup servers do they have?
Sure that there are more things to mention but my brains a bit fried today. If I think of them I'll add another post.

I have my hands tied with this one, normally I would be a little wary going this route (I bought my first Ipod this week though so I'm coming into the 21st century!), however the client uses it and wants us to use it. His business is rapidly growing so he no longer has the time to do th books but obviously understands Xero and will have access to it.
I suppose its a case of he who pays the piper calls the tune!
I'm with you. Totally hate the idea of losing control of my software to a third party. Your dependent upon ISP's and other peoples servers rather than your own machines and backups. Think that I may be a bit of a control freak though, even hate being a passenger in a car.
So, looks like you'll be getting yet another skill on your CV then.... For new clients that is, not getting a job. Thought of working for someone else must send shivers down your spine.

Shaun, nobody would employ me! I was talking to my CTA friend about the possibilities of formally doing something together. I also have an ACCA chap who I may merge with, but for this to happen I would really want to take a largely business development role. It seems odd that a lot of practices do not seem to value that part of the job as a job in its own right and would rather let their more talkative partners attempt to get a few clients in, in between producing some work..
Quick question...what is the old S419 now called, it was just about the only section I happily would mention when dealing with directors but of course now the re-write has happened I'm not sure what to call it!!
