From my own personal experience, I have found clients fall into two main food groups.
The first are those that have no interest in bookkeeping, or know how, or time but are business minded enough to know that it needs to be done. This is the smaller business type of sole trader, partnership or Ltd company, where the director is also the workforce. This group is my main client base.
The other group are the larger entities, with a few employees, premises etc and can be any type but only call on me when they need cover for their own staff. I have been getting a number of calls for this service recently, for long term illness and maternity cover.
This is only my experience and may be a regional thing.Would be interested to see what others have to say.

I offer a telephone answering service and a bit of virtual office work (though I don't tend to push the va side so much). An awful lot of my telephone answering service clients turn into bookkeeping/payroll/accounts clients as they trust you and have a lot of contact with you, so it definitely works well together.
The smaller types of business will need bookkeeping if they are vat registered, so plenty of plumbers and the like there then and I would say they could be your bread and butter clients. Your average window cleaner is unlikely to need bookeeping if they are not vat registered but if you are competent in doing self assessment taxeturns for smaller traders, then you will be able to offer that service.
