Register of Names

Does anyone know of a register of bookkeeping names that I can access to ensure that I will not be using a name that is the same or very similar to another?  Or what does anyone else do?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hiya,

unfortunately there's no protection unless you either copyright your name or incorporate and there are a lot of limitations on what names can be copyrighted. For example, you can't copyright your own name.

The best idea is to google any name that you think of. That will show up incorporated and unincorporated businesses.

Make sure that your unincorporated name isn't similar to an incorporated one as that can also get you in trouble unless the chosen name is based on your own name.

Personally I'm all for incorporation as that's my legal form but I can see the tax reasons why others might not wish to use that model for their business.

Hope that this helps,

Shaun.

Thanks for the swift reply Shaun.
I have spent hours googling different combinations of my initials and they seem to have been taken more than once - which I suppose answers my question in a way.

I was just wondering if there was any retribution someone could take if you inadvertently started trading using the same name.  A popular trading name seems to have initialsbookkeeping / bookkeepingservices. I suppose that the test is whether the .co.uk is still available.

My friend and I thought of using our initials for a joint practice, unfortunately her's are ar and mine are se - we would have loved to have done it, it would after all come up well when googled beginning as it does with 'a' and would have been a fun name but really not very professional.

That made me titter biggrin I reckon you would of drummed up a fair bit of business just for the novelty of having your accounts done by a company called arse.
