I'm waiting my final exam in August before I'm AAT qualified. Most of my experience over the past four years has been payroll and some bookkeeping work. I've done the odd simple self assessment for family/friends.
I've been approached by a potential client to do his self assessment- I wouldn't take on anything outside of my capabilities a simple return is fine for me. But the question is really am I allowed to do it?
Welcome to the forum, a lot of folks from Cornwall on here...( I am not one of them). I am not AAT so I do not know the restrictions I am sure someone else will give you an answer. Have you got a business set up, working under AAT, practice licence from them or so?
Thanks for the welcome! Sorry I jumped right in! No I can affiliate myself with the AAT until I'm qualified. I'm like someone who wants in off the street with experience but no formal qualifications!
My main job is employed work, only a few things self employed for family/friends. I suspect the answer is no I can't but wanted to be sure before I go back and say anything.
you see i would think if you do not affiliate yourself with aat than it should not be restricted what you allowed to do but i am really not sure ( i am not sure about the aat side of the story) what i do know is anybody can register as a self assessment tax agent with the HMRC apart from your name and address they don,t want to know anything and it does not cost a penny (you send them a letter saying you want to register -address is somewhere on HMRC website- and they register you, it takes a few weeks but no questions asked). there is a few threads about this on the forum, if you need more info search for those threads.
Hope this helps, sorry i know nothing about the restrictions with aat...
I won't give you the answer, but for a clue on the Avatar's it was a Dallas (tv series) theme.

I wondered if it was Dallas! Does it show my age?? I knew Larry Hagman but thats about it. ( I was obsessed with I dream of Jeannie reruns on channel 4 growing up!)
Thanks for the welcome! Seems a very friendly place.
At least you get to join Rob, Attila and Myself in the serious hat club.
Must admit, did just have a quick glance at pics of Eli Wallach but the sombrero made me think that we would end up back on the three Amigo's theme.

If we change from the Dallas theme Amanda might change her pic and I don't think that any of us want that!!!
Bill, I know that you want to be a cowboy but for the good of all the men on the site I think that we must insist that you revert to the Dallas theme... Well, at least until we can think of a Cowboy themed equivalent of Lucy Ewing.

I remember my mum always liking someone called Audy Murphy or something like that. She said he was a real life hero, I know nothing else of that though!
The Saturday afternoon BBC2 film whilst Grandstand was on was invariably a Western or War film with Audie Murphy, John Wayne or James Stewart so I pretty much grew up on his movies. (Hate all sports so the films on BBC2 were a far more appealing... Apart from missing the end of most of them as my Dad would invariable swap the channel for the football results).
The guy was a second world war hero and he became the most decorated American soldier of WWII which made him the darling of Hollywood and a propaganda windfall for the US Army.

I'm new to this website also and it has got alot of information, wish this site had been around when I first started. With regards to your query about bookkeeping or Payroll the law states because of the Money Laundering Act you have to be registered with either HM Revenue & Customs or Institue of Bookkeepers both ways you have to pay a fee.
Sorry, just a slight correction to your post Carol.
If you register with HMRC you have to pay the fee.
Alternatively you can be a member of any of the following bodies to be exempted from registering directly with HMRC :
Association of Chartered Certified Accountants General Council of the Bar General Council of the Bar of Northern Ireland Council for Licensed Conveyors Faculty of Advocates Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland Law Society Law Society of Scotland Law Society of Northern Ireland Association of Accounting Technicians Association of International Accountants Association of Taxation Technicians Chartered Institute of Management Accountants Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy Chartered Institute of Taxation Faculty Office of the Archbishop of Canterbury Insolvency Practitioners Association The International Association of Book Keepers Institute of Financial Accountants Institute of Certified Book Keepers
Hope that this clears up any misunderstanding,
kind regards,
Shaun.

lol. I didn't edit out any of the contents, just cut and pasted it in it's entirety from Appendix 1 of MLR9 (see here http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/mlr/mlr9.pdf).

As explained to me, you have to be either pay a fee to HMRC for a annual fee for a certificate which will allow you to work as a self-employed book-keeper or payroll agent or you can join ICB in which case you still have to pay to be a member and this will allow you to work under their supervision. Either way you still pay.
