Good morning, I hope someone can help.... I have been asked the question this morning by a potential client.... are we a payroll bureau? Can someone please explain to me the difference between this and a normal payroll service?
A Payroll bureau is an entity whose prime function is in taking outsourced payroll and processes it.
A Payroll service is the accountant / bookkeeper who offers to process payroll as a value added add on to other services.
The actual work performed is no different between the two but Payroll Bureau's tend to be more geared toward processing Payroll services for clients on an industrial scale.
That said some bookkeeping practices state that they offer a Payroll bureau service and they are not lying as their service does fit all of the criteria of the definition.
Basically, the two phrases can be used interchangeably but to my mind Payroll Bureau's are larger entities that offer this service to the exclusion of all others.
