Hi I am just starting studying ICB Level 1 & 11 on my own. I have joined ICB and purchased Kaplans 'Practical Bookkeeping' and also the study text. Can any one recommend any extra books which will help? I have noted some titles like :- Business Accounting lev 1& 11 by woods & Sangster Book keeping and accounts by Woods & Shelia Robinson, Mastering book Keeping by Peter Marshall Mastering accounting skills by Margaret Nicholson. Are any of these better than others? Regards Clare
I've heard that the woods and sangster ones are good, had a work through one and liked it, but like anything it depends on you, my tutor discredits them, claims to of bought them and they have sat on his shelf since. Best thing to do would be get them from the library, all of them, then buy the ones that help you most. You can never have enough books.
The only one that I would add to the list is business accounts for bookkeeping and financial accounting courses by David Cox which is an AAT standard text.
You are unlikely to need anything in the Business Accounting volume II until you move on to management accounting.
The Marshall and Nicholson books are excellent starter books which pretty much annul the need for the Practical Bookkeeping book by Kaplan.
One of the best revision books that I know for basic bookkeeping is the BPP AAT foundation revision companion for units 1-4 (your only really interested in units 1-3 but they come in a single text).
The problem that you may have with so many books is information overload where you want to do all of the texts and end up doing none.
Try to find one text to use as a basis then add others as you need.
My eldest boy swears by the Nicholson book. Personally I think that Cox is best but really all that matters is the writing style that you feel most comfortable with.
Good luck in your studies.
All the best,
Shaun.

In this business one can never ever have enough books... I've got eight billy bookcases crammed full of accounting texts and there another 108 on my save for later list on Amazon waiting for the prices to drop.
Also, on Woods and Sangster, I think that they're pretty good but an accountant friend of mine thinks that they're rubbish. It really is all down to personal taste.
No one book ever has all of the answers but the list that you've got does pretty much put you well ahead of the game in having the odds in your favour of the right answer being in there somewhere.

Thanks for your replies, I have got Woods & Sangster lev 1 out of the library and it looks quite a good one to work through and I think Ill invest in some of the others. At least Im on the right track. Regards Clare
