I know this has been done to death.  But following a discussion on another forum about the need to register or not for the Data Protection Act with the ICO, I contacted the notification department at the Information Commissioners Office and was told unless I undertake auditing work I need not be registered.

I asked specifically about all the bookkeeping tasks I carry out, and about self assessment which I will do soon, and nope, don't need to register.

Has anyone had any contradictory information?

Kris

Hi Kris

This seems to follow on and concur with the information I have been told and what is posted on their website.

I think the bottom line is, that we as bookkeepers, are data processors and not data controllers, and it's only data controllers that need to register

an update, called them again after someone posted conflicting information on the other forum. I was told this time I DID need to register.

Do these people know what they're doing??

Hi Kris

They are probably like most large organisations, HMRC quickly springs to mind, where you ask the same question to two different people within it and get two different answers.

My understanding is that we don't have to register

Regards

Mark

PS I have just found the thread on the other forum, definately some conflicting views.

Book-keepers do not have to register with ICO for data protection. Ignore what is said on UK buisness forum - it's wrong.

Thanks, I was beginning to doubt myself. Especially after that second call to the ICO, and everyone saying I was wrong.
