Employee expenses
Permalink Closed

Guys

Here's one for you....

An employee uses his telephone for business calls and claims his expense from the company. The total amount includes the VAT charged from the tel co.

Question - can the Ltd co claim the input tax on these calls??

I don't think they can, as its an expense claim for business use from the employee using thier own phone and the tel co bills the employee and therefore the bills are in their name....

What do you think?

Thats exactly what I thought!! Still got to fight a BIG company who thinks they know best, as we charged them VAT on the gross total and they think otherwise.

btw, welcome to the forum!

Hi there cheap accountant,

don't take this in a nasty way as it's not meant that way at all but as a chartered certified accountant I don't think that the name oyour website is in line with the ACCA guidance on advertising.

Quite happy for you to tell me that I'm wrong but having just had to change the name of my company as it had the name associates in it when I didn't actually have any I know how picky the ACCA can be about company names and advertising.

I've not got my books with me but I remember the basics of must not be disparaging of other member practices, must not make undue claims about one's own services, must not bring the profession into disrepute, must not advertise fee's, must be honest, legal and in good taste... I know that there are other bits but I can't remember them.

Just thought that advertising as cheap-accountant might bring the wrath of the Glasgow posse down on you?

Anyway, regardless of that, welcome to the forum and hope that we get lots of opportunity for technical debate when I've finished my current contract.

All the best,

Shaun.

Hi Sheila,

hope that your well.

you might actually be right about the ICAEW.

I got stomped on by the ACCA for having Associates in my company name but I know another local accountant whose with the ICAEW and they've not pulled her up at all about her company name (which also has associates in it).

Anyway, I'm quite happy as mine now sounds more like an accountancy practice than hers does biggrin (even though she is a fully qualified accountant and auditor with a successful practice and I'm still outside washing the cars!).

I've just noticed that we've got someone from the ICB on the site! Hope that it doesn't make us start behaving ourselves on here!

Unfortunately I gave away too much info in one of my posts and I was easily identified - but I've never criticized the ICB anyway. They are a fantastic bunch. biggrin

Watch out for a new forum member with a sheep based avatar.

Hi Shaun

Nice to know you are still about!

How's sunny(?) Scotland?

You have missed some interesting discussions/ debates, which could have benefited from your input.

I for one do not mind the ICB getting involved on the forum, as long as the comments and questions (that goes both ways) are constructive.
I am sure that ICBUK will take advantage of the opportunity to get feed back both positive and negative. I can't imagine that there isn't an organisations anywhere, that doesn't know how important complaints are to improving the services offered and on meeting/ exceeding customer expectations (starting to sound like a corporate procedures manual now)

Hi Bill,

sunny Scotland has for the most part been quite wet and windy. Luckily they don't let me out of the office much and at least its quite warm there.

Hows life down your way? You must be crawling with tourists by now.

The person from the ICB whose on the site so far seems to be quite accomodating. It might do the people at the ICB good to hear how their decisions go down in the real world as I know from meetings that I've had that the way matters are perceived around a table are quite different to how they are met by those they effect.

If this turns into a two way dialogue to open minded representatives then this might really work in the ICB's favour.

Lets just hope that the open minded and helpful person that we've got to chat with at the moment doesn't get replaced by one of their more dictatorial representatives.

right, just off to have a quick read of a few more posts and then back to the stuff that pays the bills.

Talk soon,

Shaun.

Hi there,

glad that you told me about the change to the rules on fee's, wonder if I dropped a point on that in the christmas 09 sitting of P7 as I did mention that in the exam?

Anyway, you're obviously on top of the name thing but I just felt that I should mention it as it.

On the ACCA front to be fair they do actually quite specifically have it in their rules about the word Associates. I've owned my company for longer than studying ACCA (bought it off the shelf back in 1990) and didn't really pick up on the name issue.

There seem to be quite a few ACCA students and members now on this site. I like to think its that we're a lot freindlier bunch than some of the accountancy forums where one strays at one's peril!

After saying that I do still spend quite a bit of time researching answers over on Accounting Web as there are some very clever little bunnies over there who put my knowledge to shame.

Anyway, more messages to read before my battery gives out on the laptop. Hope that your well and business is booming,

Talk soon,

Shaun.
