Obtaining Professional Clearance

Hi everyone,

I'm a little hazy about the rules around obtaining professional clearance.  If i'm acting solely as a bookkeeper and then sending the client to their accountant, do i still need to contact their accountant before i start to obtain clearance?

Thanks

Anyone can be a bookkeeper. Likewise, anyone can call themselves an accountant (in the UK). What you cannot do is call yourself 'chartered', 'certified' or equivalent. Lots of UK businesses do the books themselves and then use an accountant for their year end and tax. Whether they choose to outsource that to an external bookkeeper is a matter for them (not their accountant). Hope that helps.

I would write to the Accountant anyway, to introduce yourself as you will need to liaise with them at the year end I should think. You could also ask if there are any opening balance adjustments you need to post.
