I was just wondering if it is possible for me to register as an agent online to file vat returns without actually having a clients vat return to file at the moment?
I have afew clients who in the future will be wanting their returns filed online but not quite yet. I thought I would see if I could register as an agent now and perhaps that would make the process in the future faster?
Thanks Angela. The only options I can see though in my services are 'Vat Registration' which then asks me for details of the business or just 'VAT' which is to register myself for VAT. The fact the 'Vat Registration' service is in the services I can use, does that mean I am already an agent?!
Yes, if it is in your list of 'services you can use' and the Main Menu on the left has 'authorise client' then you are already registered and ready to go!!
I registered only a few weeks ago but am having a senior moment (I'm only 21 - kidding) can't remember exactly what I did.
If I do remember correctly, you still have to enrol and there is an option for agents that are VAT registered and agents that aren't. Select the appropriate one and follow the steps. You then have to wait for an activation code (by post). Once you have that, you enter it, and you are an agent for VAT.
The system will let you do some VAT stuff but not everything 'till you get the code.
I have also registered as an agent to act on behalf of clients and i am not vat registered. I have found it helps that you can then deal directly with HMRC rather than having to do all the work through the client.
The instructions Bill has given are pretty much how it is done
Thanks for your replies. I've clicked the non vat registered agents part and now it is asking me for a VAT Agent Reference Number e.g. AP1234 - This is the agent reference obtained from Pre-registration service. Have I missed a step?
