Hi I'm just starting out with my business and try to get it off the ground (as previously stated in my first post) by sending out letters to get interest from possible clients/accountants. Do any of you have a copy of such letter? Any advice would be gratefully received. Many thanks
I have struggled with this too, managed to compose a few line but it doesn't sound professional enough to send out to accounts.
I did an introduction and my qualification that's all I could come up with and my mind went blank, I didn't want to go rambling on so its still unfinished.
Thanks Michelle, I did see you previous post and from that I thought you had got a great response with lots of idea's sent your way. I'll try and pull something together and see where I go from there. Its getting the right balance without rambling on.
I wrote a few of my own letters which were getting results, slowly. Recently I decided to bite the bullet and hire a marketing consultant to do one. What came back was a 3 page letter that sounded so much like a sales letter for a well known insurance company that by the end I thought I was getting a free clock or parker pen for phoning.
I guess what I am saying is that even the experts don't get it right all the time. Experiment with a few letters, note which ones get the most phone calls etc then you'll know what works for people in your area. And if you decide to call in the experts just remember the one thing I forgot, they may know all about marketing but no one knows your business better than you.

I have been reading with interest as I am in the throws of trying to attract more business from accountants. I have got a list of the internet of all the local ones (quite a few luckily), anyway my question is what type of info does anyone put in the letter??
Do you list your qualifcations, ie I am part-qualified AAT and just about to finish payroll before embarking on AAT tech course. (due to family and work commitments taking me a while to get round to finishing AAT).
Do you list how many clients, or how long you have been self-employed for etc?
What about duties, ie small business, self-employed one man bands etc do you mention what you do for these clients obviously not too muich detail as can't break client confidentiality.
Having a Friday afternoon blank moment sorry if its long winded as always and help is always appreciated. Forgot to say already know a few due to clients already having them so have already mentioned to them about work.
Hire a copywriter. One who prides themselves on using real English and can give you a fixed price. Writing copy is like acting for writing - it's hard to sound authentic and get leads out of it. It's tax deductible too (well, if you are a sole trader).
I can recommend a really good one if I'm allowed to post that here.
I'm sure that R is just taking some notes as everything that you write on the site is copyright and property of bookcert Ltd. so it can't be reproduced, quoted or referenced without their specific written permission. (refer to point 18 in the forum rules).

The last post was clearly a joke. I know that I own the copyright to my own posts but give the site permission to use them. I did, however, go and read the rules. While I don't have any great issues with my content being here I can't see the legal basis for the forum owning the copyright to my work any more than if I had a painting hanging in a gallery (like any gallery would want my paintings).
Still, it's never bothered me before, and I doubt things will change now I've actually read the rules.
