The route to accounting
Permalink Closed

I'm currently looking at my options, I have been working in general admin roles for 9 years since leaving school and have some limited experience with accounts and the relevant software. I'm looking to moving into accounting, within the next year I want to start and complete my AAT Level 2 qualifications but I'm also looking at doing a degree with Open Uni.

Choices I want to look at are either:

Maths and Statistics
Economics and Mathematical Sciences
Mathematics
Business studies with accounting

Just trying to get a few views on what you would consider the best choices, I'm going to be studying the various accounting boards qualifications (AAT, ICB etc) as well as this, so I'm looking for a more broad degree that will give me an overall advantage.

I'm living in Sheffield, and don't see myself moving near London so I'm not looking at the big four in any way, but I'd like to build a half decent career for myself.

Any ideas and help appreciated!

It is clear to me that it would be business studies. But it depends on what your goal is, ie. where do you want to work, and in what capacity.

Since you are here, it must be to do with accountancy, right? so you may be heading for an eventual directorship. Ask yourself this: if you ran a business and you were looking for a finance director, would you choose someone with a degree in Maths, or someone with a degree in business studies with accounting?

I hope that helps :)

Hi,

To get a job with the big four you haven't got to move to London, they have offices all around the country. PwC has an office in Sheffield and they normally do offer training contracts in all their locations.
It is a different matter if you can get a job with them with an OU degree or not...

Sorry, perhaps I didn't come across very well, when I said about the big four, I meant I have no intentions of ever going that route, it's just not something i'm interested in.

ok. did you think about ACCA MSER? You would study chartered accountancy with ACCA and get a degree from Oxford Brooks in accounting at the same time.

That looks pretty interesting, another route I will have to take a look at!
