To hyphenate, or not to hyphenate ?
Permalink Closed

That is my question.

Just been searching (again) for "book-keeper" related graphics.
Google is fine,  as it also searches for "bookkeeper" and "bookkeeping"
Other search engines are not so flexible.

Has anyone taken time-out to check on the official (OED or CED) spelling ?

How did the hyphen creep in ?   confuse

Hi Bob

All three permutations are correct Bookkeeper, Book-Keeper and Book Keeper (likewise with bookkeeping, book-keeping and book keeping)

Trivia:  Bookkeeper (and bookkeeping) are the only words in the english language with three consecutive paired letters.

Hello,

The ICB removed its hyphen back in 2006 due to the Oxford English Dictionary spelling.

The IAB hyphen it in their name, but not always in their text. I assume the ICB took the hyphen from the IAB when they were formed, but not sure.

Google suggests the hyphen is wrong and asks if you would like to do the search again without the hyphen.

I've never hyphenated it. People find it a very confusing word to spell though for some reason.

I was going to jump in with something clever but Bill beat me to it :)

However, here's something you may be interested in... Recently we were looking at QuickFile users who had entered their profession as 'Bookkeeper' (on the registration screen), I have to say it didn't initially occur to us to also check 'book-keeper'. From the sample of 210 accounts we found 184 used 'Bookkeeper', 20 used 'Book-keeper' and wait for it... 6 used 'Bookeeper'. blankstare

Hi Michelle,

that was the Kris' original userid... If you want to know what happened click on the userid and look at the last posts (which are a closed thread).

Any road up, you may not have got the cryptic message to me the other week but that was why Kris warned me the other day about getting dragged into trench warfare with posts.

Anyway, main thing is that he's back now and I for one am jolly glad he is.

Hi Shaun

Still alive and kicking biggrin

Been so busy I didn't know if I was counter sunk, or punchbowl.

I sacked one client, and lost another to his newly qualified sister recently. Neither are a great loss, as they were both PITA (that's why I sacked one), so I am a bit quieter now.

Hopefully more time to get back on the forum smile

Looking forward to getting into our debates  matrixfight.gif, especially now Robs back as well.

Bill

Sounds like a plan. Got quite a bit on for the next three weeks but after that looking forwards to turning a few completely innocent inoquous little questions into major debates about tax and financial reporting.... Even if the answer does end up as a there or there abouts. lol.
