Self Assessment Service

Made Simple started a new self assessment service this week: http://www.taxreturnsmadesimple.com/

Do others think this is an opportunity or a threat to their services?

You are always going to get this type of service and it offers a cheap option, which I imagine is only for the very simple returns! It does not however give the personal touch that many self employed guys can give, which would be a selling point over things like this.

I see this all the time on websites that quote their prices, their prices are always "from £xx per month". I wonder how often the "£xx" price is actually used.

If you go to the instant quote page you get the exact price based on choices you make.

I never bothered trying that as usually you will spend 10 or 15 minutes filling in various pages and you get to the final page and it wants real details and/or an email address. I don't want pestered by them or inundated with spam when they sell my email address on.

But I'll give it a try

£149 + vat for self employed apparently. Not that different to what I charge really, and my clients like coming to see me biggrin

You scan relevant documents and they complete your tax return. Not entirely sure whether they're expecting you to have collated it all first though. It doesn't give a lot of info really.

So the consensus is that this is not a threat to face to face self assessment?

Theres a complete lack of advice, when you have someone in front of you it is possible to glean from them all sorts of other sources of income. I'm sure they will get business but it wouldn't be a lot of good for self employed clients , even if they have a set of accounts prepared, the profit shown is not going to be the taxable earnings.
