Being the curious type that I am, I am wondering if someone can define a technical point.
As it is that time of year, I have spent quite a bit of time filling in various HMRC forms. One of these was for NIC class 2 exemption certificate. On the form there are several tick boxes for the type of entity. My query is, that there is a box to tick if you are self employed and a seperate one if you are a soletrader. Can anyone define the difference between the two?
I have always treated them as one and the same, however HMRC seem to seperate them.
If you are a sole trader then as you know you are the business, you can be self-employed i.e need to complete a tax return without being a sole trader for instance if you recieve income from property.
I had a quick look online for the form you were referring to and couldn't find it. All that comes to mind is that you can be self employed but not a sole trader EG if you are in a partnership. Does this help?
