I've just come across a company who say that they don't pay sick pay for the first 5 days you're off work and then pay SSP after that.

Is that allowed? I know you can shorten the waiting days if it is your company policy but I'm pretty sure you can't lengthen them!

Do you mean 5 days without pay or do you mean the company pays normal salary for the first 5 days before moving onto Sick Pay?

As far as I am aware the first 3 waitingf days are either paid or unpaid depending on policy/contracts then ssp kicks in on day 4.

hmm interesting. I know of a firm that pays the first 4 days in a year full pay and then after that they pay SSP.

SSP is a horrible scenario to deal with and I would suggest your give a HR company a ring. ACAS is a good starting point to get his clarified.

Will do. SSP is a pain especially when these are hourly paid people with no fixed days!
