Wrong NI Number used
Permalink Closed

Hi Everyone,

I'm new here so I hope I'm doing this right  smile

I wondered if anyone had any info on an employee using someone else's NI number.
This has just come to light in a company I have been working for in the last week and I wondered what the implications of this are?

The employee involved has now requested his own NI number what I need to know is:
1) will me updating this info in SAGE payroll affect his historical data?
2) will this have any repercussions for the company with HMRC?

Any help gratefully accepted

Just to get this straight-

The employee was knowingly using someone else's NI, or it was incorrectly applied to him?

as far as I'm aware he gave the incorrect information so I assume he knew it wasn't his number

i'm not sure about point 1, but for the 2nd part concerning HMRC, all i could find through google is that people using the wrong NI # are cheating themselves out of NI benefits later on - no repercussion on the employer it seems.

Hi,

Yes that's what I saw as well - thanks very much for your input on this though
