Help need filling in SA on line
Permalink Closed

Hi Everyone,

I am just finishing my SA on line off ( I know I have left it to the last minute again), donw all the calculations no probs, its told me what my tax is at the end and it says in BOLD letters this figure does not take into account any tax you have paid for on account for 09/10.  Well I have overpaid on account for 09/10 is there any box that I should have put what I have already paid in???  I have read it and I am not sure, and rather than ring the HMRC tomorrow (as I probably won't be able to get through), thought I asked on here instead.
I have saved my tax return so I can go back into it tomoz.
Or do I just wait for the HMRC to send me a statement of what I have paid and what I am in credit for???
Also it says I don't need to pay anything on account for this year but if I wanted to pay something to ease the burden later on what box should I put the figure in.

Hopefully someone will point me in the correct direction.  I don't normally fill in SA as you have all probably guessed but as my calculations are easy I do my own on line.
Many thanks,

PS I am going to do mine in May this year to avoid this happening again!!!!!!  I was in study mode last year so didn't do mine when I should have!

Hi Amanda,

I can't speak for the HMRC online filing system as we use third party software, but I don't think there's anywhere to put overpayments on account.

All you are returning is the amount of tax you owe for the year, which ultimately ignores any old balances or payments on account. If you've overpaid and are due a refund, you would need to ask for it back.

Similarly, if you want to pay something on account, you can do, but I don't think you need to report it. You simply send HMRC money - make sure you put your UTR number as the reference, otherwise it may sit in suspense!

Hi Nick,

Thanks, they only owe me just under £20 so not bothered about actually getting the refund it can go towards next years tax, when I submit it will they actually pick it up that I have already paid for it then? As don't want to get a fine!
It does have my tax ref on it so thats OK, I always do it via the HMRC website.

Thanks,

If you look at your account online you should be able to see the payments sat there assuming they are payments you've made directly, and not deducted at source. Once the system updates your tax return then it will see it doesn't need any further money from you. There isn't anywhere on the form that you record payments on account, but there is a box if you want to amend your future payments on account.
