self employed person hotel stays?
Permalink Closed

Hi there, would the following be an allowable business expense for their Tax Return?:

A weeks course (for self employed new business - therefore course was neccessary for them to do the work) to do in area far from home, so stayed at Hotel for the week.

Stayed at hotel while working away from home for 2 separate nights, to save travelling back and forth.

Many Thank for your help.

Hi Lor,

hope life is well with you.

As Elain states the accomodation will be allowable however be careful when it comes to meals as for self employed the general rule is that they are not.

I'm thinking of the HMRC ruling here where they stated one must eat to live, one does not eat to work, therefore meals fail to pass the wholly and exclusively test (see BIM37660).

Just thought that I would add that bit.

talk soon,

Shaun.

Thanks Elain and Shaun. I haven't been on here for a while. Business has seemed to picked up for me more so than last year. Seems funny to think back to when I first started, I feel a hell of a lot more confident than I felt back then. I am still enjoying it, still working Full Time and also joined the gym over 5 months ago and have been doing about 5 classes a week, which is taking up quite a lot of my time, I don't get home till 7pm, but it makes me feel good. It is hard trying to balance it all out!. But I do enjoy being busy though, which is a good job really lol.
