Hi, i'm Kerry from Sheffield and I am new to the forum.
I am currently looking for work. I am wanting to broaden my knowledge of book-keeping, like evrybody else, I'm finding it hard to find anything suitable. I have put an ad on gum tree and I have emailed a couple of local Accountants. I am already working as a volunteer.....but its just admin hmm

Is there anybody on ere who would like an helping hand from me to enable me to gain more experience in Sheffield?? I am more than willing to do it for free biggrin

I am AAT qualified and I have used sage line 50 before!!

Or if you have any advice on what else I could try I would be most greatful!!

Thank you smile

Hi Kerry

I live in Sheffield too and am just restarting work after maternity leave since December. I got my first client today and although I can't offer you any work experience, we could still be bookkeeping buddies and give eachother a little support x

Hello Paul,

Yes I am self employed and after completing my manual bookkeeping certificate through the ICB, I completed the computerised levels using Sage Instant Accounts and have have used Sage 50 for one of my clients in the past.  I am pretty confident with using Sage and have also used it for my previous client's Payroll also.

I do work from home though and would not be able to work from an office due to other commitments.  I hope that this wouldn't cause a problem.

Terri

Hi Terri

Not a problem working from home. I do! only use the office for meetings. Everything we do is online installation, training and support. I am a bit busy working on a new version at the moment, but could show you the software in the form of an online demo at some point and to discuss what I am looking for ?

Hi All, I live in Sheffield also. I currently am employed as an accounts assistant and studying AAT level 3. Eventually I would like to become a self employed book-keeper. I want to start a family in around 2 years but unfortunatley do not have family local to use for free child care lol and I certainly do not have the luxury of become a full time stay at home mum! So I thought bookkeeping from home would suit me. I do feel though I would not have the confidence to start up on my own as I have only worked for Ltd companies and only used Sage! I have noticed on this forum that AAT does not tend to be the choosen qualification for the self employed and I am a little concerned I may get to two years down the line and not have the qualifications/ skills required. Do you have any advice Terri? I am looking into a payroll course as I think that will certainly be a bonus but I am not sure which one to do. I would be happy to volunteer but as I work full time and go to college two evenings a week, I think I would struggle to find a time to suit most people.

Hi Jen,

sorry to but in on Terri's thread but just picking up on one point.

"AAT does not tend to be the choosen qualification for the self employed"

That's nothing against the AAT qualification but rather that many find it difficult to get the experience requirement to become MAAT whereas they can set up as bookkeepers with ICB or IAB without such experience.

If you set up a bookkeeping practice as MAAT MIP then you can offer the full spectrum of services (excluding Audit and Insolvency work).

It's an excellent and well respected qualification and many more would go down that path if it was open to them.

kind regards,

Shaun.

P.S. ok, said my bit, back to Terri again.

Hello,

I thought I would further expand on the quote "AAT does not tend to be the choosen qualification for the self employed"

I think you are probably refering to the membership, rather than the qualification. As Shamus said the AAT is an excellent qualification.

If you feel like you would prefer to join one of the other bodies to become a self employed bookkeeper, you can do with your AAT qualification (AAT 2&3 at least). You could then have the benefit of a well respected accountancy qualification, along with the benefit of a body that specialises in bookkeeping and the self employed.
