Hi Pauline,

yep, it's from April 6th.

the section in the Budget report is 1.150 and 2.136 :

2.136 Approved Mileage Allowance Payments (AMAPs) rates from 2011-12 From
6 April 2011, the AMAPs rates will rise to 45 pence per mile for the first 10,000 miles and 25
pence per mile thereafter. In addition to claiming AMAPs rates, an allowance for passenger
payments currently in place for business employees, at 5 pence per passenger per mile, will be
extended to volunteers. (Finance Bill 2011) (31)

So for a director of a ltd co using his own car:

5p x 10,000 miles = £500 x 20% = £100 tax saving

Typical sole trader saving = £500 x 29% = £145

Its still not enough. 40p/25p came into effect in April 2002 I think. average fuel cost as at April 2002 was approx 73p for unleaded and 74p for diesel.

Compare that to 45p/25p for 2011, average fuel costs for March 2011 £1.32 unleaded and £1.39 for Diesel. price per litre is approx figs based on http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/fuel/fuel-price-archive.html

Now,who thinks the rise is a fair reflection of fuel costs today?

Should be more like 80p/50p.

How much of the 40p or soon to be 45p relate to fuel though?

Except that the allowance is supposed to provide you with a contribution towards all running costs/cap allow etc. Would have to be a couple of quid a mile to make most of my clients happy!!

It may not be enough but it is a step in the right direction!

It did come in in 2002 prior to that I think it was based on the cc of the vehicle and yes it is supposed to reflect the running costs of a vehicle not just fuel - road tax, insurance, maintenance - the current 40p soon to be 45p goes nowhere near these costs but at least this government has actually raised it whereas the old one never did.
