Payroll - AaT/ ICB/ IAB
Permalink Closed

Hello,

I finally decided with one thing and now come up with another confusion.

I finally decided going for AAT. Yes confused witht he training provider though. Any suggestions? I found only two providers for AAT - Premier Training and Kaplan.

I was thinking to start with Payroll alongwith the course. In a hope to broaden my job prospects/ self employement.

I came accross all awarding bodies offering payroll mangament course. Now i am confused which one to go for? Can anyone pls suggest me which is the best on to go for and which trainig provider is the best for that?

Thank You

Yukti

Hi Yukti,

If you have chosen AAT it might be best to stick with them. AAT are ceasing their Payroll qualification though so you would have to finish the course before they do this (I think they might have already ceased it, maybe an AAT person could clarify dates).

Otherwise I would be more than happy to talk about ICB Payroll biggrin

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. Actually i was confused earlier about what course to seek ICB n AAT. I found AAT is more recognized and door opening for more jobs. So i thought to go for AAT. Have not yet finalised but yet m not abl to decide between ICB and AAT. Even for AAT i got one level exemption through the skills check test. For ICB am not sure what level to start. I want to do Payroll also and found ICB and AAT more detailed ones. i just want to know which one is the best. Can you tell me about ICB payroll? Is that enough for any payroll job? or do i need any other knowledge of payroll with it to?

If the AAT r ceasing their course then m surely not trying that one. As such i dont want any course that has any time restrictions. Have a liitly one to look after too ;). So i think ICB would b best.
Can anybody pls tell what is the best path ICB or AAT? After reading your reply i got confused again. I read in other forum topics that there are not much job opportunities for ICB? Is it true? I may also think for being self employed but not sure. With AAT i m scared of so many exams. :O . Pls somebody clear my confusion. I just was to join it next week. Either ICB or AAT along with the Payroll course. Also the course provider suggestion would be appreciated as there are many of them...

Thank You
Yukti

I went with ICB as I want to be self employed, after 10 weeks I have 6 clients (no advertising).

When I use a training provider I use training link, they are great no hard sell and response to emails with in hours even at weekends!

thats something more inspiring towards ICB. You mean to say is that you did the complete ICB course? How did you manage to get 6 clients??? Do you need any assistant?? Lol, me here.
How did you get 6 clients? Can you share your success story if you dont mind? I m so confused righ now, some say AAT is more recognized, some say ICB is not in depth, doesnt have many openings... I guess Training Link do not give the software.. it gives the 180day sage ..

The current AAT payroll ceases at the end of this year and you can only register until about May, there are no plans at the moment to replace it. There are two levels (NVQ 2 & 3) with a couple of exams but most of it is work based assessment (or skills test simulations). I enquired last month about it and was told I might be able to complete in the time available but would struggle to find a tuition provider which is required due to the way assessment is done! That might help you.

The full AAT qualification is separate to the payroll qualification. There are three levels with a lot of exams (computer based now) and you need at least one years work experience to actually qualify as an Accounting Technician rather than simply passing the exams. Only way you can use the MAAT designation. I'd say it's definitely the one to go for if you're aiming for employment as ts most well known currently and very well respected.

If you're aiming for self employment then the ICB or IAB will be a good route for you (although as a qualified MAAT you can get a practising licence).  One thing to consider is that the AAT covers more ground.

I want a payroll qualification myself and am trying to work out whether IAB or ICB will suit me best. Anyone?

Having being on maternity leave (ended in court) I knew I could never work for an employer again. I knew the self employed route was right for me and I can fit it around the children. I have experience and was doing ACCA prior to having my 1st child. I got 3 clients from the ICB and the others I've picked up by word of mouth. I love doing what I do and will do the level IV. I've currently got a few more leads just by mentioning it to friends.
