Printer Problems!!!!!
Permalink Closed

HI Everyone,

Sorry this is not a bookkeeping question!!!  I have a Printer HP OfficejetJ5730 all in one, great printer, but yesterday starting spewing a black line on one side of the fax.  I have one client that I use the faxing facility alot for (I know you all probably think its old fashioned but works very well for what we do), anyway cleaned it all out today and actually took it apart alittle bit.  Went back together OK after the clean so I thought I was doing quite well, but now I have a 'Paper Jam' light on and can't do anything with it at all!!!!  No printing, faxing or evening cleaning the heads etc.  I have checked and there is not any paper jammed at all.  So please help what can I do?????

If its knackered what printer/fax would people recommed??  I have looked on Amazon but I am still non the wiser!!!!  It has to have Fax/scanner on it thats really important to me.  Rang up my local supermarket and off the shelf they only do printer/copier/scanner NO fax so thats no good.  Forgot to say haven't been able to scan for a week either, although thats not as much a problem its not having a fax is a real problem to me.

I need to either sort it out tomorrow, or need to order one tomorrow for hopefully delivery Thursday/Friday as haven't been able to fax today and the work is piling up.

Many thanks, sorry its not Bookkeeping!

Regards,

Good choice of printer. Mines an HP Officejet 5610, the one before yours. I'm on my second one though as fitted a cheap printer cartridge in the last one and it absolutely messed up the allighment. I now use the ink from Tesco's to refil the cartridges when they run dry as the HP cartridges are ridiculously expensive.

I'm assuming that you've gone through the normal switching it off and on again, talking nicely to it and threatening it so a few other things to check.

For the jam check that you have the two front trays in properly. Also check inside the printer cartridge access door in case something is stuck in there stopping the return mechanism.

It might not let you but if it will try printing a self test report which if it goes through should sort out the block.

To do that press setup then press 2 and then 6 on the number keypad.

If that doesn't work try pressing the tab on the left hand side of the rear clean out door to release the door. Remove the door and have a look around inside to make sure that there really isn't an old piece of paper that's ripped off and got stuck in there.

If all else fails try www.hp.com/support which will have further help and I believe online manuals for their printers.

Good luck Amanda.

Talk soon,

Shaun.

Hi Amanda I have, probably, an even older model the Photosmart 3110. Is the cartridge which moves from left to right in the correct position? If not try sliding it to the far right, switching off and on again. Do you have a troubleshooter with the programme (HP solution centre) if so follow the instructions for the problem you have. Have you checked the connection to the phone line, although from what you have stated it seems that it is a scanning problem rather than solely a fax problem. If all else fails there's quite a few on Tesco direct or here http://www.staples.co.uk/SearchEngine-printers%20all%20one at Staples with free next day delivery.

I just wanted to share my recent experience.

We've always used HP printers and never had a problem - other than a member of staff trying to photocopy a cash book and cracking the glass, which my IT guy replaced with greenhouse glass!

Anyway, we got a Laserjet M2727 all-in-one as the main office printer in 2009, big investment for us, costing from memory about £500. We have been really impressed with it. Recently, however, it stopped working properly. My IT guy (again) went on the web and found that the problem had happened a few times. He rang HP and was initially quoted £150 to mend (it was out of warranty). He was then put through to their technical department, where he mentioned that the problem seems quite common. They then agreed to mend for free. They sent a courier to pick it up, sent emails at everystage to let us know what was happening, and delivered it back a week later, as specified (nb it had been sent to France for repair).

There was a letter with the printer when it came back. Unfortunately, they had been unable to mend the printer. So they had replaced it with a new one! OK, it may be a reconditioned one, and time will be the test, but I was really impressed with the service level that we received - bearing in mind that this was all dealt with from one phone call.

Hi Sheila and Shaun,

Thanks for your replies, tried everything (but the hammer), and still can't get ot off the paper jam. Before I took it appart and cleaned it I could at least print from it now I can't do anything with it!!!!!!

So would you both say still go for a HP printer?

I hadn't thought about looking at Tesco on line Sheila so will have a look this morning.

Shaun it won't let me print a test report I have tried that as well. Last night it wouldn't turn off either and I had to unplug it to turn it off!

Many thanks,

Hi Amanda,
Have a look in PC World online, you can pick up a 4 in 1 printer under £100, we just bought one in the office for £80, it is Epson but I think all the well known brands would do for you. Try to get a wireless printer, that's the way forward ;)
Also about the repairs, you said you didn't try the hammer yet, well you should, start gently and if it still does not work just smash it up. I have similar feelings at work in the last week with no internet - obviously most of our softwares are internet based so we cannot do anything. ISP said it's BT's fault and BT said it's the ISP's fault and nothing has been done to get it repaired.
So yes I got the hammer out,too to smash up the com cabinet...

I would actually suggest taking it appart as you did the first time and put it back together again (bet you've tried that already though).

I would have money on it that it will be the tiniest piece of paper that's telling the sensors that there's a jam.

If it really is terminal and you do have to replace it then I would still go for HP for printers every time.

They are industry standard and generally some of the most dependable available.

Unfortunately this advice does not extend to their monitors. At work I even ended up going around to PC world, buying a Iiyama monitor, then going back into the office and unplugging the works one.

The office manager wasn't too impressed about it but as I pointed out, I've just got one set of eye's and I intend to look after them! If they can't afford proper equipment for their own staff who they are happy to let look at blurred screens then that's fine by me but as a consultant I expect a certain level of equipment and their HP monitors just didn't meet it.

Shortly afterwards everyone got Sony monitors! (not quite Iiyama standard but not far off).

I've gone off piste again haven't I. Sorry, yes, HP make fantastic printers and I would always buy those. Get one from Tesco and at least get some clubcard points out of it as well.

Hi,

Yes I have taken the back of it again and looked at it there is def no paper anywhere, to be honest it very rarely ever jammed so this is frustrating.

I have gone for a HP Photosmart, e-all in one, that was a good point Attila about being wireless, so have done that as well. At least I can print photos as well now. Its the fax thats the most inportant thing for me. Cost £117 on line from Staples it was on Offer, so was please, Free next day delivery so hopefully will get it tomorrow. I did look at some cheaper ones but like the idea of printing good quality photos as well.

My nearest Tescos is about 15 mins away and I just haven't got the spare time today to go there and get one, ( I would stop and look round at the same time). Your like me Shaun get everything from tescos and like the points, they have part paid for my holiday this year. Saving the points ready for next years hols.

cheers
Everyone.

Hi Amanda,

no probs.

I'm at 4856 airmiles on the back of Tesco clubcard points at the moment. Just another 3144 and it's a return flight to Thailand paid for.... I worked out that in total to get enough points for a return trip its now in the region of £40,000 or £20,000 at double points that you need to spend. Would have been so much cheaper to just pay for the holiday I know but I'm thinking long term plan here for a celebratory 18 years of bringing up my boy alone holiday so another five years to get those extra points.

I think you've made the right move going HP again. Despite the cost of the printer cartridges I think that their printers are about the best that you can get.

I don't have any patience when it comes to electrical itrems. A few years back I hit the lid of a scanner/copier/printer type thing with a slipper, forgetting there was glass underneath. Needless to say it shattered.

Are inkjets any use these days? I get the impression the printers you are talking about are inkjets. I haven't used one for a long time as they are just so slow.

I don't normally use non branded toner cartridges but the price of Brother toners is just ridiculous now it will probably be better off for me to risk it and if it does ruin the drum then just but a new printer.

Hi Peasie,

Yes mines an inkjet and I have found them to be pretty good to be honest.
The HP didn't like the recycled ink cartridges although I haven't tried one for a while.

I am going to do what shaun does and refill it myself, that will save alot of money.

My original problem was with a black thick line on faxes but after taken it apart and finding no reason for this it now says paper jam!

Hi Peasie,

actually, on that point I bought a cheap Brother colour printer a year or so back and the cost of the printer inclusive of printer cartridges was cheaper by quite a margin than the cost of buying identical replacement printer cartridges.

Had all sorts of feeder problems with that one and just stick with HP's now... And original HP cartridges after my breaking one using a non branded one. But, not necessarily original HP ink as it's really easy to inject new ink into the old cartridge. (Just do it slowly and don't damage the sponge inside as I did with my first attempt).

Ink from Tesco's is around £5 for three ink bottles, cleaning fluid and a syringe (never sussed what to use the cleaning fluid bottle for). One ink bottle lasts for three to four refills so 9-12 refills for a fiver rather than around £163 to £204 retail for the equivalent black HP cartridges and the amount of printing that I do that really adds up in a year.

I've got two printers at the moment. The HP Officejet 5610 inkjet and the old but still very reliable HP Lazerjet 6L.

To be honest though the quality and speed of inkjets nowdays is so good that the Laserjet very seldom gets any use which at £45+ per refill drum I'm quite happy about.

I knew printers v cartridges there wasn't much difference in price but I thought that was due to them only supplying the minimum amount of ink with the cartridges supplied with the printer. Maybe I'll try an inkjet again.

Hi Peasie,

At home I have got a Kodak printer, they are the only one who gives full cartridges with their new printers. Also a full set of colour and black is under £20. First week it was a frustrating printer but I got used to it, in fact I really like it now. And the photo print quality is unbeatable.

Atilla

One of my clients has got a Kodak printer and is having problems. One a sheet of A4 print one or two lines will look like they've been printed in italic (little bits of the print missing) Also the colour is not the true colour I seem to get with my HP. The red is insipid more like pink and the green is not as sharp as I feel it should be. Don't know if it is how it has been set up, they were having the supplier/installer of all their new equipment in this week and this was one of the problems but something certainly didn't seem right to me.

I think it can be a faulty printer/setup. My colour/photo prints do come out brilliant. Not defending Kodak, I was really annoyed for a week with it but now all works fine. The main advantage is I believe it is one of the most cost effective printers for household/light use. They are fairly new in this market, their printer software has an update almost every week but they should know about colours (well, one would expect that with their 120 yrs of history).
But I must admit one of the noisiest printers I have seen...

sorry to be a killjoy but rather than worry about the cost of a printer I would concern myself with the cost of the cartridges. that is where your main expense lies over time.

Hi Neil,

welcome to the forum.

that was basically the way the thread went going from a discussion purely around fixing the printer to best replacement alternatives that got into discussions about cartridge prices.

The general concensus is not to use unbranded cartridges (as one trashed the alignment on my HP5610) but refill the originals yourself using a Tesco (or equivalent) refil pack.

all the best,

Shaun.
