Hi Andrew,

welcome to the forum.

I'm beginning to think that I'm the only one who has never gone anywhere near twitter? (or facebook for that matter). Then again, the length of the postings that I make on here where would I find the time.

All the best and welcome to our merry little band.

Shaun (Technologically challenged dinosaur apparently)

Hi Andrew

Welcome to the forum

Don't worry Shaun you are not the only not on Twitter (though I may have to start using it for promoting the business, ugh)

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I was like Shaun and Mark with the dreaded social media stuff and still dislike and won't use Facebook, however I am a reluctant convert to Twitter. Best way to explain why is in explaining the difference with regard to business.

Facebook - like being an invited guest at a family wedding. You will know most people in the room and they will all know you. You will probably all have very different interests. You only get to go to the wedding if you are invited. Everyone already knows what you do for a living.

Twitter - you are in a pub or coffee shop and know nobody else in the room. You can however hear everyone's conversation and those you find interesting don't mind you going across and joining in. People interested in what you have to say pull up a chair and listen in to your views without needing to be invited.

Twitter is a much more business orientated model and used effectively can be a valuable source of information. Don't use it to sell your service (too obvious so people won't listen to you) and (this is key) only follow those you are genuinely interested in. It doesn't have to be just about what Britney Spears had for breakfast!

Find someone you are interested in then look at who they follow, usually a good place to start.

Give it a go!

Hi Ken,

cheers for that. Puts it into a bit of perspective.

As you've got the inside track on those two I was also wondering what you thought of Linkedin.

I am actually thinking of setting a profile up on that one as it seems more business oriented but wondered what others thought of it?

Up until now I've always been able to pick up work through word of mouth but I'm thinking that it in these increasingly difficult times it wouldn't hurt to put myself about a bit more (my ex wife actually thought that I used to put myself about bit too much but that's a whole other story!).

Thanks again for the heads up on twitter I may actually take a look at it when I get chance.

All the best,

Shaun.

Don't worry Shaun, I'm not on either Twitter or Facebook. Wouldn't know where to start and probably haven't got the time either.

So you are not alone!

Hi Shaun

I've always viewed Linkedin as a Professional Employee 'database' rather than a network that is aimed at the self employed or small business. Though I'm sure there will be others using it differently.

Having spent 20 years in the large corporate world as an employee, Linkedin is too close to that arena for me, so being a carefree (ha!) small business owner its Twitter only for me.

Loving the ex-wife comment!

Ken

Got to agree Ken, I use LinkedIn but I really think it's more 'corporate' orientated.

I heard the analogy that Facebook is where you lie to your friends and Twitter is where you tell the truth to strangers. After using both for a while, I'd say that's not far off! I much prefer Twitter.

Hi from me too.

I do use twitter occasionally, but prefer LinkedIn for business.

Facebook is personal - family only. and I intend to keep it that way.
