Registering with HMRC ?
Permalink Closed

If you start a bookkeeping service as a self employed, and you do not belong to any organisations like the AAT or ICB, when you must register with HMRC, for the Money Laundering, before you start your bookkeeping service, or after you start, any time during the first three months?

I have seen somewhere written that you must register before you start your bookkeeping service, in order to first get your registration certificate from HMRC, and then start. Also I found another information, which says you can start your service without registering, but you must register during the first three months.

Thank you for your response!

Hi

Have a look at this thread, particualrly the advise given by James (ICBUK)

http://www.book-keepers.org.uk/t42735738/where-to-start/?r=883693

Just to precis it a bit. Basically you need MLR cover immediately you start trading whether you have clients, or not. Even before advertising for clients.

Hi Dga,

Do you have a link to where it says you can leave registering for 3 months?

Basically you cannot have clients, and as the ICB interprets AMLR, you cannot even advertise without first being registered.

Hi dga

I suspect you may be confusing the three month* time limit to register as self employed, with the need to register for MLR.

Bill

* Even that may now have changed to immediately

Hi Bill!

I think perhaps you are right, that was about registering for self-employed, not for Money Laundering, but I have to go to my BookcertKit, because I saw it written in the Kit. I can not remember for sure,  so perhaps you are right.

Hi James!

As I mentioned above, in my reply to Bill, I found something written about registering with HMRC, in my BookcertKit, some time ago, but I can not remember if it was for MLR, or for self-employed? Perhaps it was about self-employed. Just have to look and find it again, in the BookcertKit. Perhaps I have confused the the two types of registering.

Hi DGA,

can I just say that when using written media such as the bookcert kit that make statements related to HMRC, accounting standards and company law you need to clarify the current situation as printed media can quickly become out of date.

As with all books and manuals the contents will be correct at time of going to press but such cannot be guaranteed to remain such.... I mean, just look at the current situations with the IASB redefining what an Asset and a Liability is!

I'm sure that you didn't mean your post the way that it reads but just to emphasise to anyone else reading this thread :

James represents the ICB

Bookcert is produced by the owners of this site

Bookcert is not produced by the ICB.... Although, I suppose that we might all be in for a surprise when the veil is lifted on the site admin team at the start of June!

All the best,

Shaun.

P.S. I agree with Bill and James, there is no three month amnesty period before you need to register for MLR.

Hello,

Yeah registering for self employed is also instant now to avoid fines.

I can confirm that Bookcert and this forum are not linked to the ICB in anyway apart from I have registered the ICB on here as a user.

What kind of surprise where you thinking? smile

Hi Guys

We like conspiracy theories as much as the next person. However we can also confirm that Bookcert is not associated with the ICB, IAB, AAT etc. Sorry to disappoint!

As previously mentioned, we'll be re-launching the site with an 'about us' page on the 1st June, although in light of the interest, we may need to get some better profile pictures taken!

Kind regards,

After a 24 hour gap I phoned them back and the answer is..........

...........

.....(ooh the suspense)

..........after putting me through to 2 people, they said, you have to register by 5th October after the end of the tax year in which you commenced self employment.

That doesn't sound right to me. Perhaps I'll phone again tomorrow.
