Do I need to get HMRC authorisation to deal with payroll year end.
I have recently taken over a client from an accountant who has died. I have applied to Hmrc for authorisation for VAT and SA.
Having no other payroll clients, the payroll aspect is all new to me. I am now panicking as I have noticed there being a relevant date of 19 May which I have obviously missed.
Can I submit the necessary info or do I need to wait for any authorisation from HMRC.
Thanks in anticipation
Valerie

I believe that using the HMRC site you can submit year end forms without having authorisation. Obviously it's still worth setting it up so that you receive other in year correspondence. The client will more than likely have £100 fine for late filing, however given the circumstances I would appeal it under the reasonable excuse clause. Assuming of course that the accountant didn't die in 2010 and the client has only just got round to dealing with it!

I haven't even got payroll software sorted yet. I was going to try 12pay as there seems some good comments from people on here using it. I assume I can transfer the data from there online to hmrc.
This is all very new to me, I was hoping to have the chance to get my head round it until I discovered the deadline.

Has the payroll info not already been processed for the year? I'd have thought you already had year end figures so you could just log into HMRC online, enter and submit?

The bookkeeper who did all the payroll died and we have only been able to get basic paperwork.
As you can imagine it is a delicate situation and his wife knew nothing about his business.
Therefore, I'm playing catch up and trying to fill in the blanks. All I have to go on is the employees payslips up to February. I presume I need to produce payslips up to date to then be able to work out the year end figures.

Oh I see, yes that is difficult. Yes you will need to finalise the year first before you're in a position to produce P60s and submit information. Quite a learning curve then!
