Training and work experience

Ok i am a first year accounting student, this summer i was looking to get work experience. The local firms around my area all said no. But loooking online i found two firms KBM and St Marys who would train and get me a work placement but for some money. The prices are £720, should i go for it or are their places that train you for less? Also forgot to mention KBM are throwing in sage software free

Could do with something like this in Birmingham!

I've seen these sort of companies before and you need to check what your actually getting for your money as with some its not working in an accounts office but rather in a training room attached to an accounts office. Also, although the placements state 3 months check the actual wording of the agreement as with some companies this actually amounts to no more than two or three days a week over a three month period.

Assuming though that you've already checked out the small print and these two are ok. I've looked at both of them and KBM looks a lot more like working in an accounts office than saint Mary's which looked quite regimented (lines of desks with a pc on each with lines of people all facing to the front). But, of course I could be completely wrong.

KBM are also registered auditors so may be someoportunities to gain experience there.

The thing that would really sway me between them though was picking up IRIS skills with KBM where St. Mary's doesn't seem to offer that. You will find that when you work in practice the big two tend to be Sage and IRIS. Both of which it seems you would be trained in by KBM.

However, I suspect that most of the good training is really reserved for those signing up for 12 months rather than the three months over the summer.

Sorry, can't offer any alternatives but hope that my thoughts on this prove of some use to you.

kind regards,

Shaun.
