I'm another newbie to this forum. Just found it online - not sure how I've managed to miss it for so long!
I'm currently working as a book-keeper in the accounting department for my local council, but it's been an ambition of mine to set up as a self-employed book-keeper for a while now.
As a single Mum I'm not in a position financially to quit my job and set up straightaway. I'd like to get a book-keeping qualification in the interim. My local college offers the International Association of Book-keepers (IAB) exams which I'm quite keen on.
Is there anyone on here who has completed the IAB or is currently studying it? How did you find the course and did it give you the required knowledge for setting up as a book-keeper.
I'm a "Fellow" member of the IAB and have taken their exams. Because of this some will say I'm bias, especially as I mentor IAB members who are with the "your local book-keeper" network!
I would suggest taking a look at the IAB website (www.iab.org.uk) to get a better idea about the benefits of doing the IAB qualifications with your local college.

I'm currently studying with the IAB and I'm enjoying it. I find my technical knowledge has improved ten fold so I would certainly recommend it. It's certainly helped with my own book keeping business.
I believe the IAB leads on to other qualifications if you wish. I'm tempted by the IFA exams (institute of financial accountants) or the AAT. Although I've got to get through the IAB exams first!
Agree with YLB-HO about reviewing the IAB website, although in my opinion it's not the easiest website to navigate.
ACCA site seems to have ground to a halt as usually happens during exam season. Really think that they need to upgrade from using a ZX81 as a server!
