I have seen an advertisment in my local newspaper for a trainee accountant and also a trainee payroll position. The company offer AAT training as part of the job which doesnt start immediatley and the salary quotes £12000 - £15000 so i dont quite understand the gap of 3k. Im not a young person so i just wonder if thats what they may prefer and also i have noticed that they appear to advertise frequently which concerns me too. They are a decent sized company with work all over the UK. I know of someone who went for an interview with them a while back and they said that they had 1 hour interviews and you knew it was not going to be any longer, they spoke mostly about them and seemed disinterested in you and what you can offer them and you had a 15 minute test that had no bearing or relevance on anything. My friend was applying for an office managers job, not anything to do with accounts. It has put me off a bit but it,s rare to get training as part of a job and although the pay is 8k less than i earn now its also got me interested too. Because i plan AAT when i have completed my current studies it is pushing me to apply but i have my reservations too. Any suggestions???
It is illegal for an employer to discriminate on age (although I suspect it would be difficult to prove )
The Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2006 prohibit age discrimination in employment and vocational training. They apply to all individuals in work or seeking work or access to training, to all employers, and to all providers of vocational training (including further and higher education institutions) and vocational guidance. The regulations include a number of exemptions - for example, in relation to retirement and service related benefits - and provide for other differences of treatment if they can be objectively justified.
Ranges of salary tend to provide flexibility in cases where skill sets differ between candidates - therefore, agree with you that it's a bit odd for a training vacancy.
Thanks for your input. Mabye i should apply because even if i dont get the job it will give me experience of an interview at least. I know that sounds defeatest at such an early stage and i may not even be invited for an interview but with the market conditions as they are competition will be huge. Also as i have finacial commitments i.e mortgage etc its a bit scary dropping salary to such a large scale, my husband works in construction and jobs a are few and far between so we rely on my salary all the time when he is out of work. But at the same time if i dont take the opportunity as it arises i will never get on the market in the industry im seeking. God why is it so difficult!!!! I knew i should have done this years ago. Lol....
Hi, Not sure if you have applied yet. One suggestion might be to phone them and speak to the person responsible for recruitment for this post. A five minute 'friendly' conversation about the type of person they are looking for may be helpful. Sounds like they have trouble retaining their young trainees. So, they may consider candidates like yourself who really know what you want to do. If it goes badly all you have wasted is 5 mins and the cost of the call. A postive conversation may encourage you to apply, tell you more about the sort of person they are looking for and help you frame your application better. There is a small chance that there may be other vacancies in the company that you can apply to instead, or with a bit of luck they may be able to suggest where else you could apply to.
