CIS online return
Permalink Closed

I am doing my first online submission of a CIS return. I thought I understood it but a little confused due to a report from the accounts programme a client is using.

HMRC require the total payment made to the sub contractor, cost of materials, and total tax deducted. If subcontractor earnt £400 and was subjected to 20% deduction then the payment made to him would be £320. So are the figures on the return £320 for total payment (nil for materials) and £80 tax deducted?

I am confused because the CIS report on the accounts software list the figures as £400 and £80

I think the figures on the return are the gross and cis tax deducted, so £400 and £80.

Agree with Nick -  its the gross amount - the same figures you enter on the payment certificate and then the amount of cis deducted

Thank you - wouldn't things be simpler if HMRC worded things slightly different?

Yep agreed its the £400 as the total payment made and yes it would help massively if HMRC changed the wording
