Quick vat return question

If you have underdeclared that means you owe HMRC? So this figure gets added to Box 1 for output tax?

If you have overdeclared that means that HMRC owe you so you add this figure to Box 4 for input tax?

Is this right?

Thanks!

If you have underdeclared your sales you increase Box 1, if you overdeclared you decrease it.
If you have underdeclared your purchases you increase Box 4, if you overdeclared you decrease it.

Hth.

Thanks BB!

My friend was given a practice exam and underneath it said there was an underdeclaration of so much vat. It didn't say whether this had anything to do with sales or purchases. She rang her tutor who said exactly what you have said. But didn't explain how she would know it is sales or purchases and became quite annoyed that my friend wasn't understanding what she was saying.

She is unsure if the tutor has made a mistake on the exam paper and not given enough information or whether she is to work out somehow whether it is to do with sales or purchases. If it is the latter how would you figure this out?

Many thanks for your help! I don't usually like posting exam questions but my friends exam is within the next hour and a half and she's quite panicky about it.

If I was in that position, which I would think quite unlikely in a work environment, then I would just adjust Box 4. If there isn't enough info then there isn't really another option.
