Are the bookkeeping work-experience advertisers on Gumtree worth a go?
Permalink Closed

Hi,

I've seen a couple of people advertising practical bookkeeping experience for around £150, including use of SAGE.  I'm guessing that in reality you end up paying them to do a job that they're getting paid for!  But I don't mind, I really want to get some experience now I've completed my Open University course (please see my biog).

Has anyone on here done one of these "courses" or is it a scam of some sort?

For example:

http://www.gumtree.com/p/jobs/no-work-experience-to-prepare-accounts-to-tb-using-sage-line-5o-and-management-accounts/81301307

I've got 10 years experience of doing my own small arts-based company accounts and now I really want to get some bookkeeping work.  Full / part-time temporary / permanent, I'm flexible (at the moment!)

Many thanks for any help and advice given, I've already learnt some useful stuff reading other threads on this forum, I would really like some feedback from those who've been in this situation before. smile

Hi Matt,

Sorry, not heard of this one myself but I've just had a quick glance at the ad and that does seem an awful lot to take in in one day or even two half days with time to brush up between.

I've seen similar things for learning IRIS but they've been over several weeks at a day or two per week... They do cost an awful lot more though.

Fingers crossed someone on here will have been on this but if not I would be adverse to parting with all of the money in advance as it seems at first glance too little money for too much material.

Oh and welcome to the forum Matt.

kind regards,

Shaun.

Hi Matt, I have no experience of such adverts but am sceptical because you could get similar hands-on experience by volunteering.

http://www.do-it.org.uk/

Judging from the opening sentence, I wouldn't trust it.

"learn how to and hence be able to prepare Accounts to Trial balance as is done in the work place so as you can depict work experience and perform these.."

Many accountants will take on students from the local college for work experience without expecting the student to pay them!   I read your blog and perhaps you could write to accountants requesting work experience.

You take as much time as you require at no extra charge as these are one on ones and people have different learning speeds some needing more time than others and also some prefer say 2 half days instead of doing all in one day

I read the above as saying the £150 is a contract for 1 days tuition only.

Only my thoughts.   Others may think differently.

best wishes,

Tim

Personally I wouldn't pay someone to train me who didn't have a full grasp of grammar! One days rushed (and it'd have to be rushed to get all that in) experience doesn't get you much further ahead than you are now. Perhaps better to contact local accountants, at least you might be getting paid to learn at that point!

Thanks very much guys, you all seem to be on the same wavelength so I'll follow your advice and contact some local accountants. I guess in my eagerness I saw these ads as a quick way to "get on with it".

I just got a bit despondent after seeing an average of 100-300 applications per job on Reed's website! no

you can return as many times as you need if you need to recap any of the above say before an interview or just to remember AT NO EXTRA CHARGE.

I read that as ' you can work for me at no extra charge '
