Hi Neil,

they send me a brochure every year. Give the impression of being very professional and they seem to have passed the test of having been around for more than five minutes.

A couple of weeks after I get the brochure I usually get the follow up call by a pleasant and non pushy sales person asking about my software needs for the coming year. Again giving a very professional aura to the firm (bit like my annual chat with the nice girl from IRIS).

They have alternatives for online bookkeeping, payroll, accounts, tax sollutions etc.

They are very much aiming at the IRIS / SAGE market. Which lets be honest, that's a very brave sandbox to go and play in!

Thats the good points about keytime, the only bad point from my perspective is that I don't actually know of anyone who uses their software and it doesn't have the accademic backup of a ready supply of "how to" books the way that SAGE and Quickbooks has.

Not sure how SAGE got into the heading as to my understanding Pastel is intended as an alternative to Sage

Ultimately, for me the investment level is just too steep to contemplate a move away from VT software. But, if you were thinking of IRIS or SAGE as your business software then Keytime might be worth further investigation. (Pretty sure that you can get a free download of trial versions of any of their software).

For further discussion on IRIS see this link over to those nice clever people on Accountingweb :

And another link here where they're discussing the Keytime tax software :

Happy Saturday,

Shaun.

Thanks Shaun,
On the Keytime website under bookkeeping software there is a pic of Pastel Express and it has a Sage logo on the box. Just made me think it was a Sage product. I am only 5 minutes from Keytime headquarters and thought they might come in handy in the future but i shall check out the links you provided.

Hi Neil,

things get more confusing.

Pastel is a South African company. They seem to be a Sage partner company (not sure of the exact link) but the software is quite seperate, standalone and not linked to the Sage product that we commonly use.

Where I'm getting slightly confussed is that Keytime seem to be supplying the same product as Sage. See these links (just picked the version (evolution) that has the same boxes in the pics) :

http://www.keytimesystems.co.uk/prodtype.asp?strParents=&CAT_ID=128&numRecordPosition=1

http://www.sagepastel.com/Sage-Pastel-Software-Products/Pastel-Evolution-Professional.asp

It's not normally unusual for several companies to offer a generally available product at different prices (just look at the various sellers of Quickbooks) but with this one both Sage and Keytime give the impression of owning the product.

Interested to hear other peoples take on this scenario.
