If you have already decided you wish to become a member of the ICB then here are a few helpful hints. If it is your intention to practice then you have to decide what type of business you wish to offer Bookkeeping services for and to what level. ICB have a membership structure.
AICB
This requires certification in ICB Levels 1 and 2 Manual Bookkeeping and Level 2 Computerised Bookkeeping. This level of membership is for Bookkeepers offering a service to Sole Traders. Services for Limited Companies can be offered but only to Trial Balance.
MICB
This requires certification in Levels 1, 2 and 3 manual Bookkeeping and Levels 2 and 3 Computerised Bookkeeping. Payroll and Self Assessment are optional but if taken then other Bookkeeping services can be offered. MICB membership means that Bookkeeping services can be provided to Sole Traders, Partnership, Ltd Companies as well as Charities.
Once you have decided which membership tier AICB or MICB you then have to gain the said qualifications. People will be at all different levels and as such have different requirements.
Exemptions.
The ICB can offer exemptions based on qualifications already gained, this is usually based on qualification gained within the last 2 years. If you feel you may be exempt just call the ICB on 0800 060 2345 with information on the qualifications you hold.
Training.
Because people are at different levels they will have different needs, those that are used to working with figures may be able to just buy workbooks and be self taught, others may need the assistance of a tutor where the ICB have options for both home and centre based study. Please click on the links below for options on both where you can shop around and even contact providers for advice.
Those that feel they can gain the required qualification without the need to do a course can if they wish test their knowledge by purchasing ICB mock exams, for more info on this please click the link below. I believe you can purchase these mock exams without the need to be a member.

If choosing training provider here are some useful questions to ask.
1. Duration of each course. 2. What type of support is provided? 3. How quickly are assignments marked? 4. Software Choice (if provided) 5. Quality of Materials 6. Refund Policy I hope some of you find this to be useful.
