We received an EU VAT Registration letter recently from the 'Intracom VAT Registry' in Brussels, in respect of a client (a new limited company). Apparently, this company is now subject to VAT, and must register with the Registry - along with a fixed fee of £320 which can only be paid by credit card.
This is, of course, a scam. VAT registration in some EU countries is compulsory from the beginning, but not in the UK. We suspect that this is being sent out to new companies, the details probably being purchased from Companies House.
The letter was actually very good, it came in the 'postal payslip' format with the tear off strips down the side, and looked quite convincing.
Users of this forum are probably going to be in a position where they may come across this. If you know anyone who's set up a new limited company recently, please be aware of this.
