Help for a newbie please!

Hi, I have recently started a new role as bookkeeper at my company. I've completed a couple of online Sage courses but that's about it, so I'm muddling through most of the time. I wonder if someone could help me with a query. My employers have purchased some bottles of wine as Christmas gifts for clients. Am I able to claim any of the VAT back from these? Also, I have set up a separate nominal code for client gifts, as other items have also been purchased, eg, chocolates and gift vouchers. Is this the right thing to do, or is there a better way? Thanks in advance for your help, it's much appreciated!

Hi,

Welcome to the forum.

gifts of alchohol and tobacco products are never allowable for tax purposes.

your employer may also fall foul of the 2010 bribery act.

Have a look at this link re corporate christmas gifts :

http://www.accountingweb.co.uk/topic/business/corporate-christmas-gifts-face-tighter-scrutiny/469167

Also ensure that you have this link on your toolbar :

Thats for the short term but in the longer term bookkeeping is not just something that people can be dumped in and expect to find their way around.

Sage courses teach you about Sage and basically sod all (excuse the French) about bookkeeping and accountancy which is why bodies such as the ICB, IAB and AAT expect bookkeepers to understand the manual side of things before moving on to computerised.

As a matter of urgency and to get your library started you should buy one (or preferably all) of these books to get you started (yep, I said started. You would not believe how much reading you do in this job) :

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Business-Accounts-Accounting-Finance-David/dp/1872962637/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1324474252&sr=1-1
http://www.amazon.co.uk/AAT-Foundation-Units-Course-Companion/dp/0751766992/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1324474283&sr=1-3
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mastering-Book-Keeping-Complete-Principles-Accounting/dp/1845284461/ref=sr_1_5?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1324474352&sr=1-5
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Computerised-Book-Keeping-Dr-Peter-Marshall/dp/184528397X/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_b

If your employers want you to fill this role then they may be willing to pay for those books.

Next stage is to get you sorted out with a relevant qualification.

Take a look at these websites to determine the route that is right for you :

http://www.bookkeepers.org.uk/
http://www.iab.org.uk/
http://www.aat.org.uk/

Good luck, merry christmas and boy are you going to have a busy new year!

all the best,

Shaun.
