First VAT return for newly registered buisness
Permalink Closed

A company has registered itself for VAT from the date 31.10.2011 therefore their first period end date is 31.01.2012

Is it correct therefore that their first VAT return deadline is 29.02.2012?

Hi

If they are newly registered, paper VAT returns are not an option!

For an online return with period end 31 Jan 2012, 7 March 2012 is the deadline for submission but is also the deadline for any payment due to have reached HMRC. This link http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/vat/managing/returns-accounts/deadlines.htm may help you.

For the payment - does a DD need to be set up?

Is this the responsibility of the client?

Newly registered businesses have to pay electronically but there are a number of methods available - direct debit, internet banking, standing order, bank giro.  More information about these methods can be found here.

You may need to tell your client about the payment methods that are available but how they pay the VAT is the client's responsibility.

I am a little confused now:-

I have just spoken to HMRC - and they have said that this client can submit a paper return if they wish to do so (Note that I did make them aware that it was a newly registered business - provided them with the reg number to check)

The guidance on the HM Revenue & Customs website is clear on the point that businesses that register for VAT on or after 1 April 2010 need to file online VAT returns.  Despite the advice that you've been given, I suspect that your client hasn't received a paper VAT return so they won't be able to file it by paper anyway.

Ahhhhhh Robert what you seem to be unware of -  is that it is impossible to file a online VAT until after the first VAT return has been completed!

I have just discovered this little problem due to the need to have the details of the LAST VAT RETURN in order to register to file online for a newly VAT registered client.

I think you will find all businesses must file their first return on paper, and then register to file returns thereafter online.

I'm afraid that it's not impossible.  I filed a client's first VAT return online last month.   You're right that when you register for VAT online, they ask for the final month and the box 5 figure of the last VAT return submitted.  However, their guidance says to put 'N/A' and '0' respectively if you have not yet submitted a VAT return.

Yes you are right - I stand corrected. Just registered a client on line for VAT submission as agent.

Thank goodness for your last post Robert. I was starting to panic. It didn't seem right that HMRC want everyone to file online except the first return, but that's what made it more believable.

Thanks for putting me at ease again.
