Payment Support Service

Hi all,

I've got a client for whom I have just submitted a VAT return (30th Nov QE), and he has called this morning to say he cannot pay the amount due and has asked whether I can call HMRC to arrange a payment plan.

I haven't ever had to do this before and wondered if anybody can give me guidance on what sort of questions they ask? He has had payment arrangements in the past with his old bookkeeper and the HMRC website states that they want more detailed information if this is the case... how detailed do they mean?!

I just wanted to know so I can have the correct files in front of me when I call.
(I may need to mention that in the past I have had terribly anxiety problems when it comes to making phonecalls, so find that being prepared helps to overcome the worry)

Any help would be greatly appreciated

I don't know others feelings, but when speaking to HMRC about such things I find it easier to put it in writing. If nothing else it gives me peace of mind of knowing what was discussed and having evidence of the reply. As anyone who has dealt with HMRC knows, you can get 4 answers to the same question just by calling 4 times.

I agree with you that writing is easier! If I ever need to contact the VAT helpline I always e-mail instead of calling so what they've replied with it proof....

Unfortunately I don't have time to write on this occasion because the return was for a Nov QE so the payment is due this Saturday.

Hi, depends if you are registered for HMRC to talk directly with you (completed form 64-8) - if not they will have to - the helpline has so far been helpful to my clients although I have left them to talk direct - it is easier to agree a payment plan.

Hi Fin,
While since I've done this but I think they'll want to know his disposable income each week/month.  They may be turning the screw because he's had an arrangement before.   If he is on 'Cash Accounting' their attitude is that your customer has had the VAT Revenue over and above his normal sales income.   If not on Cash Accounting, then they may want to know when outstanding income is likely to be received.
As you may have guessed, all this questions whether he has a viable trade or not.   Depending on what side of bed the tax officer has got out of, they may be sympathetic and not wish to put him out of business.
Regards,
Tim
