Spare Laptop brought for business and personal

Hi everyone,

Just a quick question back a few months ago I brought my son a new laptop as his old 2nd hand one gave up the ghost.  His old laptop I use to use for one client who I have got Sage instants V10 on my current laptop, but because mine is Vista I have to print all the reports etc from my sons laptop as can't print them off mine.  Hope I am making sense! This particular client is only an annual one, so should I claim a small proportion of the cost of my sons laptop or not claim any at all?

The inv is made out to my Soletrader name and I paid for it on a credit card. Not really sure whether to claim it or not.  His Laptop is Windows 7 and it allows me to print all reports even though it is an old SAge instants.  I also have QB and other Sage programmes that I could put on there if mine was to ever break and use his in the interim period if mine had to be repaired or if I had to go and buy a new one.  So you could say that his is kind of my spare one?

Also lastly this might have a bearing on peoples' answers I am looking at getting a spare laptop in the next couple of months as mine is now 3 years old and has a few hiccups occasionally, probably cause it always on!

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Ps I have Sage instants V12 on my laptop as well and that one prints fine from Vista, its just the old V10 that doesn't like Vista for printing.

Many thanks

Neil,
Its his laptop but he has been told that when its time to print the reports for that particular client I shall be using it!!!

Anyone any thoughts on it??

I'm an honest person and don't want to claim anything that I shouldn't claim for, I have to set my clients a good example!!!!

thanks

Just own the laptop and save yourself the hassle to be honest. Lend it to your son for whatever he needs it for but keep it as your primary tool.

Oh Amanda i didn't mean to imply you were upto anything naughty, your story just reminded me of what adults are like (mainly men) with childrens gadgets and toys. Like Steve said, i would treat the laptop as an asset and let your son have use of it, call it a perk of the job after all you probably could only afford to buy it because you had a customer who pays well but needs their reports doing on said laptop before they will release any payment to you. Now that sounds like a catch 22 situation. Understand your honesty though but i wouldn't be worried about the laptop, if it was a top of the range coffee grinder then maybe.
