SME HMRC CRACKDOWN
Permalink Closed

I am sure most on here will know the following information which may I add I found to be amazing, I will in my usual nature make light of the facts but there are very serious undertones.

HMRC will be cracking down on small business in the next 12 months with an estimated 20,000 companies being visited by them. Visits will be based on companies HMRC believe not to be keeping accurate records.

For me the most staggering stat is that all companies visited last year by HMRC over 40% had little or no proper records. (info taken from ICB website 19.01.12)

With the above stats in mind all Bookkeepers touting for business have the perfect marketing tool to gain custom, for a small fee I will of course offer any marketing advice for those that need it lol.

It is incredible to think that in the modern age companies still fail to keep accurate records.

Hi David,

I wonder how much of this is down to ignorance or naivety compared to, say, willful neglect.

I am a little surprised its that high, but I've got one that doesn't know his a*** from his elbow so I suppose not surprising!

I also have another one who had ran a company along time ago, and now has another company, and he doesn't know too much either, it amazes me how they just think the business and any money will sort itself out on its own, with no input from them!

Sorry thats my moan for today, had a hectic day.

Hi David,

but at the end of the day, 20k businesses seems like a drop in the ocean as there are in excess of 4.5 million UK based businesses out there so it would seem that there is around 0.4% chance of being visited where if the figures are to be believed 40%, or 1.8 million businesses need to be visited.

Of course, at times it does at times seem when trying to secure new clients that around 4.4 million of the 4.5 million businesses out there are either bookkeeping businesses or accountancy practices!

Easy targets to get £3K a pop, rather than put the work in to get the real villains of the piece which would take a lot more work.

Bit like UKBA who used to give sponsors who they degraded from a A to B rating notification of what they needed to do to regain their A. Now if they degrade an employer they still tell them what they need to do but charge £1000 for the this and if the £1000 isn't forthcoming straight away they cancel their sponsorship and the employer has to let the migrants they are sponsoring go. You couldn't make it up.

There are alternative ways for the government to reduce spending like getting rid of 100s of quangos which do little, if any good, and pay way above average salaries to the cronies hey employ.

Rant over/

Was there not a climbdown on these check ups - did they not originally want to do 50,000 a year for x years?

I don't understand how they can fine anyone £3,000.

HMRC vistis Business A.
Business Owner says "Here's my organised shoebox of receipts - I will give it to my accountant on 1st January and will have my tax calculated and paid to you in plenty of time before the 31st January"

What can HMRC do?

I HOPE HMRC can do something - for selfish reasons.

Well it appears that it is small companies that are being targeted. I note from watching QI on Friday that in Pakistan should you not pay your taxes you will be visited by tax collectors. These collectors are not your typical dreary grey suited tax man; oh no they are cross genders. The idea is you send one cross gender tax collector in to see the business owner and if he dont pay up they return the next day in numbers and dont leave the premises until payment has been made. I wonder if this would take off in the UK, in fact it would probably bring in the company in debt extra business lol.
Shaun tongue in cheek mentioned us being a nation of Bookkeepers and Accountants, was it Napoleon who back in the day said we were a nation of Shopkeepers? Oh things have changed lol.
Training providers (not us) are reaping the benefits of Government and European funding which is allocated to the UK to retrain our nation, this funding has to be spent by the end of the agreed term, if not then it means less funding next time round, this means that we are not a nation of Shopkeepers, Bookkeepers or Accountants, we are in fact a nation of fork lift driving childminders working part time in a care home. When was it the UK was known as Great Britain?

Never, it was only ever Scotland, England and Wales that was known as Great Britian, when the Irish came on board we became the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.  Who knows what you'll be known as when the Scots depart. ;)

To be honest - not really. I couldn't care less where I was from. Largs, Ayrshire, Scotland, GB, UK, Europe, Earth - it's a' wan tae me. Still like to see England get beat at football though. Now to check the tennis results - is Andy Murray still Briitsh or is he back to being Scottish?

Sorry Peasie

Andy Murray is one thing Scotland is welcome to (unless he owns an oil field, then he's British)
