In a situation where a VAT return was submitted which did not include all the transactions for the period, is it possible to make an adjustment in the following periods VAT return? Also, are there any penalties for this happening?

Hi

In my experience if you have missed out a few transactions that should have been included in the prior VAT period you can add to the next if they are small amount. If you have a huge amount in the large thousands then you might need to contact them for more advice as my prior employers experienced.

VAT notice 700/45 applies to your query as explains how to make the correction.
