Subcontractor not registered for VAT! Materials Treatment??

HI There,

Just a quickie on subcontractors charging for materials. If they are not registered for VAT can I still claim the VAT on materials they charge??

What VAT? They are not registered for VAT, so they can't charge you VAT.

If THEY incur VAT on materials they purchase, it simply becomes part of their cost.

HI Thanks for the reply.

Thats what I thought so from my end I claim the full cost of his labour and materials as an expense regardless if his materials include a portion of vat he cannot claim back??

Hi Noel,

obviously your supplier is the subcontractor. If they are not registered for VAT then their invoices would not include any VAT element so you can't claim any VAT. Where they get their materials is their problem and you should not look into that for VAT purposes.
