This is an interesting one as people often believe that they are buying the bottle where they are actually only buying the contents and borrowing the bottle.

I worked with one company where someone had twenty bottles delivered and had then sold the empty bottle on for scrap metal (the valves are worth a fortune on some models).

I think that the person got about £10 per cylinder in scrap but the gas supplier recouped £500 per cylinder through the court.

I appreciate that didn't answer your direct question but I'm assuming that the direct question may be misplaced.

For the gas purchased, if it was for heating the business premises then it would go down to heating costs.

Anything paid for the cylinder is likely to be a refundable deposit. You will need to check the wording of the agreement.

We pay tax at 20% so what ever tax code is 20% for us, however fuel for heating is generally quirky, we sell coal, if we sell a ton we have to charge 20%, if we sell 975 kg we can charge 5%. It's a crazy world.

My previous work used to sell Gas bottles (odd for a double-glazing firm but the previous company that owned the premises were a surf shop and sold gas bottles for camping, but alot of old people in the area relied on these for heating in the winter) and I'm pretty sure we sold them at 5% VAT with tax code T5, but I'm also sure we were able to claim back 17.5% on them at the time.
