Did everyone see HMRC's decision recently on smartphones?
For a number of years employers have been able to provide a mobile phone tax free to employees but decided in their infinite wisdom that smartphones weren't mobile phones, but computers. These were treated as a BIK.
They have now reversed this, and say that now a smartphone does meet their definition of 'telephone apparatus' and will no longer be subject to tax. They also say if you've been charged for these smartphones since 2007 they'll give you a refund.
Nice to see HMRC with some common sense, if a little later than the rest of the country.
