Naming your business
Permalink Closed

Hi everyone,

I will be sitting the ICB self assessment diploma soon and decided to apply for my practice licence.  On completing the form I decided on a name for my business and purchased the PI insurance in that name.

However, I have now come across another bookkeeping business close by using a similar name.

My question is this.  As I have purchased the PI insurance in the proposed name will I now be charged to change it if I have to.  It is with trafalgar.

Any help appreciated as always.

Elizabeth

Hi Elizabeth,

No they wont charge you, the ICB will if they have already posted you the certificate, but just an admin fee to resend the certificate.

You will have to send your old one back.

Thanks Peasie & James.

James, I realised my mistake before sending off for the PL. Just the insurance to change. I'm spending the entire day thinking of a new name. Got family helping. Never thought this would be so difficult. Every name I think of someone is already using.

I did an extensive search online before i chose my name, also did domain name host searches... which means you can have your website with the right name. I went for Back to Black Bookkeeping, but registered as www.backtoblackbooks.co.uk (and .com) as not everyone can spell bookkeeping...! lol

have you searched for the domain yet?

Thinking of a name is a nightmare! We had a change of company name last year and we occasionally still get the odd cheque payable to the old name!

Think of the names for your business and got to Domain name sites www.123reg.com is the one i use (they also have template tools to design one with them if you wish too! ;)

Then put what you like to call the webite as in the search on the site and it'll tell you if you can have it or not.
I came up with Back To Black Bookkeeping, BUT not everyone can spell bookkeeping, so to avoid poeple not being able to get hold of me i shortened it, Back To Black, but couldn't have that as someone else did as that druggie singer has a a song called back to black (which i didn't know when i came up with the name) so someone obviously decided to have a website all about this one song! :/ dear oh dear...

So i thought of Back to Black Books (yes i sound like a bookshop, but better that than not getting custom at all!) so www.backtoblackbooks.co.uk was born!!! :) only cost around a tenner for 2 years with a .co.uk, and 7.99 for a .com. But have a look about, just punch 'Domain name providers' in Google for a wide reange of providers and prices... BUT please read the small print! :D

 Similar to you Gary

My business name is Wella Book Keeping Solutions (Note the seperation of book and keeping) I thought that a) it would be much to type in wellabookkeepingsolutions and b) to easy to use hyphen or under score to seperate book from keeping, so settled for wellabooks.co.uk

Only one person has mentioned that they initially thought it might be a book shop. 90% of my clients have found me via the website.

Made my own. It's not very pretty but it seems to get to the top when you search for a bookkeeper in Cornwall, so I'm loath to change it
