Hi,

I contacted sage today to see how much it would be to upgrade my version of client manager and was gobsmacked at the quote. I am now thinking of moving away from sage altogether and was wondering if anyone could reccomend software that would be easy to get my head around and would be able to do flat rate VAT.

Any advice would be very welcome

Thanks

stephen

I am a fan of Quick Books but I don't know if the latest version supports Flat Rate scheme or not. My old version Pro2008 does not so you have to do a journal for the diff.

I'm a fan of VT Transaction. Its not set up for a flat rate scheme, but you can get around it by posting expenses to customised Standard Rate / Zero Rate codes. You can then see totals each quarter, calculate the VAT and journal it in.

You wouldn't regret it Roz but the current version 7 does not have the Final Accounts add-on (which makes it a killer program for micro-businesses) available yet.   I've therefore stuck with version 6 which is getting a bit behind the times.   Still, the bookkeeping software alone is worth it.   No connection btw.

It does say 'contact us for earlier versions' at the above link but you'd probably end up buying the new version as well in the next year.

best wishes,

Tim

LATER:  Hi Vince, I'd say comprehensive is a pretty good description of available report permutations; by period or account, supplier/customer, nominal, vat, or user defined 'mark' codes or any combination of the above as well as pre-defined ones.

I have used TAS Books for many years and find it ticks all my boxes but unfortunately it was taken over by Sage and now comes with a Sage price tag, hence I have never bothered to update my version. I do use Moneysoft payroll and I am very tempted to purchase there account package as I have downloaded the trial version but not had time to go through it fully yet.

I'm always keeping an eye on alternatives to Sage because although I know it extremely well, I don't like paying the Sage tax, and I don't like Sage themselves after some of the quibbles I've had with them - but each time I look at a possible alternative, I discover there's some aspect of it that's unsuitable for my needs.

The most common problem I've found is that the reporting is too limited - so when I see "Comprehensive and user-customized reporting" as a feature, I get interested. So I've bookmarked Moneysoft's Money Manager, to take a proper look at when I'm approaching the time that the next annual Sage tax payment becomes due.
